EDUCATION IS AT OUR HEART...

Saint Andrew Society of Hawaii, Inc., (“SASH”), a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote education and appreciation of Scottish arts, history and culture in Hawaii, is offering scholarship awards to students attending an accredited post-secondary institution or vocational school submitting the best essay on a notable person of Scottish ancestry who made a significant contribution in the arts, history or culture of Hawaii.

A scholarship grant of $1,000 and up to $2,250 will be awarded to a qualifying applicant for the essay judged best for each calendar year. The deadline for submitting completed applications is May 15 (by mail or email). Award winner will be notified by June 1.

Eligibility Criteria: NEED NOT BE SCOTTISH TO APPLY!

  1. Student entering/attending an accredited post-secondary institution or vocational school.

  2. U.S. citizen; current or former resident of the State of Hawaii.

  3. Submission of application with essay to address below by May 15.

Judging Criteria:

  1. The subject of the essay is a person of Scottish ancestry who made a notable contribution in the arts, history, or culture of Hawai’i. The subject of the essay need not be an ancestor nor family member of the applicant.  Please refer to the scholarship link at https://standrewsocietyhawaii.org to see which subjects have been covered by previous years’ essay submissions, as preference will be given to essays covering new subjects. 

  2. The essay preferably includes personal interviews with the subject (or his/her descendants), original photos or historical documents, and/or offers personal insight, analysis, and/or research of subject. 

  3. The essay format may be memoir, biography, historical fiction, video essay, or video documentary. 

  4. The essay length should be at least 900 to 1,500 words, not counting bibliography and any exhibits appended (submit single .pdf file); video essay/documentary length should be 5 to 10 minutes run time (.pdf album or standard video file). The submission must include at least two scholarly sources and/or interviews with persons relevant to the topic. All sources must be cited (APA or MLA style preferred). For written submissions please use Times New Roman 12 pt font with standard 1-inch margins.

  5. Discovery of plagiarism will disqualify an applicant indefinitely. 

  6. If you are awarded the scholarship, SASH will publish your photo and biography on our website to announce your award. If you are not able to be present for said award, we request a photo of you to include.

General Information:

  1. Scholarship award disbursed directly to the student. SASH does require proof of enrollment in accredited post secondary institution by such time as scholarship award is paid.

  2. Winners are eligible to reapply to years from the winning award year with new. No limit on other eligible applicants to apply or re-apply with new or added work to their previous essay.

  3. Awardee grants SASH open license to use, post, archive or publish essay.
